Legacy: Courage, discipline, and perseverance.
After the Civil War, Black soldiers known as the Buffalo Soldiers served with distinction in the U.S. Army, especially in the West. Despite facing discrimination, they protected communities, built infrastructure, and upheld duty with honor. Their service after 1876 laid the foundation for future Black military excellence.
Famous Name & Legacy: First Black Colonel in the U.S. Army.
Colonel Charles Young was a West Point graduate and a brilliant leader. Serving after 1876, he broke barriers during segregation and proved excellence in leadership, diplomacy, and military intelligence. His legacy lives on as a symbol of determination and dignity.
Famous Name & Legacy: First Black graduate of West Point.
Commissioned in 1877, Lt. Flipper served with honor despite unjust treatment. His perseverance represents resilience and truth. He was posthumously pardoned, restoring his honor and legacy.
Famous Name: Sergeant Henry Johnson
Henry Johnson fought fiercely in WWI, protecting fellow soldiers despite severe injuries. His heroism was overlooked for decades but later honored with the Medal of Honor. The Harlem Hellfighters showed the world unmatched courage.
Famous Name & Legacy: Hero of Pearl Harbor.
A Navy cook who became a symbol of bravery, Dorie Miller manned a weapon during the Pearl Harbor attack, saving lives. He became the first Black American awarded the Navy Cross.
Famous Name: Benjamin O. Davis Jr.
These Black pilots shattered myths and racism through skill and valor. General Davis became the first Black general in the U.S. Air Force, paving the way for integration and leadership.
Famous Name & Legacy: Four-Star General, Secretary of State.
Though serving later in the 20th century, General Powell stood on the shoulders of those before him. His leadership, humility, and service embodied honor and integrity at the highest level.
