A Homemaker or Home Health Aide is a trained professional who helps Veterans with personal care and daily activities, allowing them to remain safely in their homes. Although not nurses, they are supervised by a registered nurse who assesses the Veteran’s needs. This program serves Veterans of any age who need assistance with daily living or who are isolated, as well as those whose caregivers are experiencing stress. Services can be combined with other home- and community-based programs and may vary by location. Homemaker and Home Health Aide services are provided through VA-contracted agencies and can be an alternative to nursing home care or used for Respite Care at home.
Respite Care is a service that gives family caregivers a break to rest, run errands, or travel. It supports Veterans of all ages who need help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or meal preparation. Care can take place at home or in other locations. This program can be combined with other home- and community-based services to help reduce stress for both Veterans and their families.
